Fascial Stretch Therapy

Poor posture is a sweeping epidemic afflicting almost every person in the world.  In Canada alone, over 50% of the working population has lower back pain!  The sight of a forward head position, rounded shoulders, internally rotated arms, and anterior-tilted pelvis is commonplace in offices, at restaurants, and in the gym. If these patterns are left unchecked, injury rates increase, breath and mood can be impeded, and performance diminished. We were given all the athletic ability and function we need as an infant, however, through our lifestyle today, our biology has changed for the worse.

FST is a pain-free system of assisted stretching which focuses active rehabilitation on the muscles, joints, and connective tissue. With the client on a treatment table, the therapist will help you stabilize your body as you are gently helped into specific positions to help facilitate relaxation and movement into your joints and body.

"FST was amazing.  As you know I have chronic impingement in my cervical spine.  Samantha worked to loosen my left shoulder and neck, and all the way down my left leg.  She noticed some misalignment compared to my right side possibly caused by the tightness in neck and shoulder.

Unlike other active release therapies I had experienced, FST was surprisingly gentle. Even after only 30 minutes, I felt like a new person.  Samantha managed to loosen up a lot of tightness in my shoulder, glutes, and quads on both the left and right sides.  I felt like I was even breathing better, my head clearer. Before and after pictures showed an improvement in my range of motion and posture - which can help me get the most out of my workouts and prevent further injury.

The activities I have been doing at Gravity have helped my chronic injury greatly, not just in getting me back to regular activity but also in gaining strength so I don't get an acute flare up.  But I can see FST becoming a regular part of my maintenance program to help with recovery from hard workouts, keeping proper form, and general well being.  I appreciate having access to this service right at Gravity, too.  No other gym does this, and I hope we can get it going with some regularity after a few more folks try. Personally I can see booking every 3 or 4 weeks for maintenance."

"I came in primarily in search of relief for a sore right hip and a stiff neck. Samantha moved my leg this way and that. She did the same with my arms and my head, showing me how pushing into my hand was a more effective way to stretch my neck.  The movements appeared subtle and painless, but the gains were big. I felt immediate release in the hip and lower back and my shoulders didn’t feel like blocks of wood anymore.

A few hours later I realized that the dull, low grade headache I had been experiencing since Tuesday had subsided. Shoulder checks during driving were suddenly smooth. I hadn’t been prepared for this but I was absolutely ecstatic!

Thank you Samantha, I can’t wait for a full session now."

"Healthy skepticism summed up my mindset, but I was determined to give my initial FST session a fair go.  I have a left side tight QL issue and generally stiff hips due to lower mobility that I'd like - so asked Samantha to focus there.  Wasn't sure what to expect.  Calming, enjoyed the ongoing dialogue while various pushing, moving, pulling etc. was going on which led to subtle changes in the movements experienced . More gentle than I expected.  Skip to the end and off the table I pop.  Hips feel free and loose.  Samantha asked me to try a squat.  That led to the OMG moment.  No sharp pain from the left lower back and free and full range of motion.  Mind-blowing.  But now for the best bit, I've had physio on the QL issue and do mobility/flexibility work weekly (which all helps for sure), but the stiffness/pain typically returns within 24 hrs.  It's been a week since the session - pain/stiffness yet to return.

To sum up, everyone should try this.  It's suitable for anyone, and it not just for those with injuries or problems, in the least its a replacement for a traditional massage at no extra cost but leveraging that kinesiology knowledge to generate longer lasting and more sophisticated benefits."
