Introduction to  Weightlifting

Tuesdays and Thursdays 7:00 - 8:20pm
(Optional 3rd weekly session Saturdays at 10:30am)

About the Course:

The Intro to Weightlifting program is designed to teach the fundamental skills/technique of the two Olympic lifts - the Snatch and the Clean and Jerk.  Weightlifting is one of the best ways to increase muscle power and strength.  At Gravity, we do engage in these exercises but its a small part of an overall strength and power building program.  We focus on activation and mobility drills, main compound lifts that provide a full body workout and 'accessory' exercises (e.g. snatch balances, push jerks, push presses to address positional awareness and timing, toes-to-bar, pull ups, bicep curls, reverse hyper-extensions and more) that round out a complete strength program.

All of this, of course, will enable participants to Snatch and Clean & Jerk pain free, in good form (so good mobility required) and that will greatly enable full-body strength gains.  To be clear, you never need to put a huge amount of weight on a barbell and attempt to lift it - that is the competitive end of strict Weightlifting.  We primarily engage in the myriad of exercises and movements that will build tremendous full-body strength and functional mobility. You can use this course to get started with this fun and effective type of training.

We have National level lifting coaches at Gravity that will coach you through a program to begin to foster proficiency in numerous main lifts.  This will include various drills and accessory exercises that will positively impact your strength/technique.  The key focus of this course is teaching correct technique/form and timing of the lifts rather than emphasizing loads on the bar.  We will leverage wooden dowels/unloaded barbells for much of the technique work, with dumbbells, barbells and weights leveraged for the accessory work.

This course is aimed at beginners, who have had little to no exposure to Olympic lifting in the past.  The aim of the course is to introduce you to this discipline and learn the basic techniques and movement patterns.  This is an ongoing program at gravity (*for members) but for those wanting to try we have a 2 session introduction package - see link to register below.  You can start at any time.

Participants should be 18 or over.  Participants who are 16/17 will need parental permission to participate and are by invitation only.
