About the Course:
This program is designed to teach the key skills/technique of strength training using weights.
It is important to note this program is suitable for all fitness and experience levels.
Strictly, Powerlifting is a form of competitive weightlifting that measure three tests of strength: the bench press, squat and deadlift. At Gravity, we do engage in these exercises but its a small part of an overall strength and power building program. We focus on activation and mobility drills, main compound lifts that provide a full body workout and 'accessory' exercises (e.g. biceps curls, triceps extensions, overhead pressing, rows etc.) that round out a complete strength program. All of this, of course, will enable participants to bench press, squat and deadlift pain free, in good form (so good mobility required) and that will greatly enable full-body strength gains. To be clear, you never need to put a huge amount of weight on a barbell and attempt to lift it - that is the competitive end of strict Powerlifting. We primarily engage in the myriad of exercises and movements that will build tremendous full-body strength and functional mobility.
This is an ongoing program, regularly scheduled program at Gravity but for those wanting to try, we have a 2 session introduction to Powerlifting package - see link to register below.
Those attending the 2 session introduction program or those attending regular will begin to learn the technique and movement patterns required to perform the three main lifts as well as the many other exercises undertaken. Our National Level lifting coaches will coach you to begin to foster proficiency in the various movements and lifts. This will include various drills and accessory exercises that will positively impact your strength/technique. The key focus of this program is teaching correct technique/form and timing of the lifts rather than emphasizing loads on the bar. We will leverage wooden dowels for much of the technique work, with dumbbells, barbells and weights leveraged for the accessory work.
This course is suitable for beginners, who have had little to no exposure to Powerlifting or weight training in the past. The aim of the program is to introduce you to this discipline and learn the basic techniques and movement patterns. The program is ongoing as part of our standard membership for those wishing to continue this training.
Participants should be 18 or over. Participants who are 16/17 will need parental permission to participate and are by invitation only.
About the Instructor - Ms Mihaela Westlind
Mihaela. was born in Romania and grew up on Vancouver Island. She spent over eleven years performing Classical Ballet. After her pointe shoes were laid to rest, she started to train in the sport of CrossFit. She Trained and competed in the sport for around three years. As a competitive person, Mihaela was looking for a sport that allowed her to take advantage of her short stature; therefore transitioned into Weightlifting.
Mihaela has had some success in the sport. She’s competed in the women’s 53kg weightlifting class and now the women’s 55kg class. She has held the BC Provincial Champion spot for three years in a row at a point, and on and off from then. She’s placed top three in Western Canada and top ten in Canada. As a national level lifter, her goals are to keep working hard with the aim of competing internationally for Canada.
Mihaela has trained in Sweden, Romania, Bulgaria and Canada with the National Teams and participated in some international training camps. Sharing her skills and passion for this sport is what drives her. She has led weightlifting training camps here on the mainland as well as coached CrossFit, Weightlifting and one-on-one fitness sessions.
